Satellite Capacity Trading

When Sir Arthur C. Clarke suggested in his 1945 article in Wireless World magazine that the communications needs of the whole world could be served by a network of three geostationary satellites above the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans he really didn't know what he was starting off.

Today several hundred commercial satellites are in orbit around the earth. As the technology has moved on, satellite dishes have shrunk in size from the monster 30m diameter antennas found at Goonhilly Downs and other major earth stations to the 40cm antennas widely used across Europe to receive Astra today. In the 1990s there was even a brief foray into hand-held satellite terminals to work with Iridium, Globalstar, and the other huge constellations of low-earth orbiting telephone satellites (all now made largely redundant by the rapid spread of GSM phones).

Today's satellites operate in  a range of different frequency bands including L-band, C-band, Ku-band and Ka-band, each having their own characteristics in terms of coverage, capacity and connectivity. Choosing an appropriate satellite for a particular application is not a trivial undertaking, and is made all the more difficult by inaccessible and sometimes intransigent satellite owners & operators. A buoyant re-sale market for satellite capacity that has been leased but is surplus to requirements adds a further dimension to the equation.

Hollycroft Associates is an active member of the trading exchanges including SatCap that operate markets for the re-sale of  satellite capacity. Either through our own contacts or through our membership of these exchanges, we are able both to source and to sell satellite capacity for our clients at the best available market rates.
